In short: After ten years of treatment, Tamar gives birth to a healthy baby boy… a miracle! A miracle?? Then why does she fear him, as if he were her enemy?… Why is she unable to kiss, hug or breastfeed him?… The nurse tries to reassure her, that it’s natural, these things happen… Tamar wants to believe her, but then three guests arrive, who hold a dark secret from Tamar’s past… Will knowing what her mind has so cleverly shielded from Tamar, save her or destroy her?
For someone who has been through sexual abuse, the most trivial acts, stretching our arms out to hold our newborn child- can be an almost impossible task…
Synopsis : After ten years of treatment, Tamar finally gives birth to a healthy son… a miracle! Miracle?? So why does she fear the baby, who is three hours old, as if he is her enemy?… Why is she unable to kiss or hug him? Tamar had hoped that motherhood would give her the final stamp that she is ‘normal’. For years she’s been fighting the feeling that she’s not normal, that something is wrong with her. The nurse in the maternity ward tries to calm her. She assures her that it is natural, within a day or two it will pass and be replaced with maternal love. Tamar wants to believe her, but then three guests arrive to visit the new mother; A wild and unrestrained teenager, a pious newly wed woman and a little girl. The three hold a dark secret from Tamar’s past… a trauma that her brain shut down to protect her. But the sharp pain in the birth canal suddenly released what her soul asked not to know…As the play unravels, we understand that all the characters, including the nurse, are different sides of Tamar herself. The guests (younger versions of Tamar), who have been shut out for years, by the ‘Nurse’ (Tamars’ alter-ego), believe it is time now for Tamar to know what happened in order to understand why she is distant from her baby.
But the Nurse believes this knowledge will not help her, it will destroy her, and she’s determined to do everything in her power to shut them out again.
