Translation of the original article from Slovak to English:
A comedy about the challenges of modern motherhood
The premiere of I LOVE MAMA opens the 75th anniversary season of DJGT, subtitled “Legends”. And although we can find many legends in art, it is MAMA who is the unwritten legend of perhaps each of us.
The comedy play full of women comes from the pen of contemporary Israeli dramatist HADAR GALRON, who is also directing it! Thanks to this, for the first time in Slovakia, we will get to know the director’s handwriting of a world-renowned playwright, director, actress, stand-up comedian and a recognized theater personality working in various multi-cultural environments. Women’s themes, the search for tolerance are among her typical author’s features. In addition to the play I LOVE MAMA, she portrayed them, for example, in her drama MIKVE, also known in our theater environment.
The production I LOVE MAMA brings nine women and three generations of one large family to the stage – from a dominant grandmother to her four very different daughters, her new daughter-in-law and two granddaughters… all seek their place in modern times. Humorous situations and witty dialogues capture, with deep insight, also the more serious aspects of motherhood: how to combine motherhood with a career, how to maintain a marriage alongside motherhood, how to have a child without a man, how to cope with an unexpected pregnancy, how to manage postpartum depression, how to face an orthodox mother, to find yourself, and feel the taste of love.
All the male characters are portrayed by a single male actor who is also the live pianist of the production.
The original score is composed by the internationally renowned musician Itamar Gross. Prominent names of the Slovak theater scene Jozef Ciller (scenographer), Eva Kleinová, Mária Danadová (choreography) and others, also take part in the unique production. Guest actress from the Slovak National Theater, Božidara Turzonovová, plays the role of the grandmother and ‘Big Mama’ of the family, double-casted with local actress, Jana Pilzová.
Comic, serious and touching portraits of women from three generations are a refreshing title in the repertoire for male and female viewers alike.
