In the play of the contemporary Israeli playwright, the mikveh – the space of the ritual bath where religious Jewish women are regularly purified – becomes a place where different approaches to faith and life collide. Šira, a new spa, comes to the Orthodox community, in front of whom the fates of the local women slowly unfold – dramas that everyone knows about, but no one talks about. In her attempt to help, the empathetic but at the same time vigorous Shira runs into the barrier of religious rules and human prejudices. The women’s community, cemented for years around the spa town of Šošana, initially rejects Širu, resists the new perspective and the solutions offered, so that in the dramatic conclusion the women try to defy the binding rules of their community.
